Funny, I just sent the idea to Acid Dragon.
this is how I did this a couple of years ago. I did it as a Text tournament to all my friends. It was 4 brackets, all with a common theme (kinda). each bracket has eight characters. for example- Superman vs. Man thing, Manhunter vs. Thor, etc.
Then you do the bracket till there is a winner, pretty basic. Winners of bracket A and B fite, C and D fight. then Last two fight in the finals on neutral ground. Say the last two are Jason voorhees and Shao Khan. They would fight somewhere like Asgard or the phantom zone. Something like that. Each match is determined by votes.

I have an idea for four brackets
1. Comic Heroes (Marvel, DC, whatnot)
2. Sci Fi (Star Wars, Battlestar...etc)
3. Fantasy (Lord of the Rings, Narnia, etc)
4. Horror Genre (Freddie to Frankenstein)

Maybe two tournaments, one for good guys one for villains?

yea< there is plenty of stuff you can do. I personally try to go with broader strokes, but those are all great ideas for tournaments. We could do an all ladies tournament. We could do a cosmic level one. One that ive always liked to do is a 16bit tournament. Any character from the Genesis/SNES era. Like Haggar vs. terry bogard. Sub zero vs. Kilgore. Bubsy vs. Sonic. Mario vs. Aero the acro-Bat. stuff like that.

Tournament sounds rad. How big are the brackets going to be? Comic heroes is incredibly expansive. Maybe comic heroes should be a separate tourney, with that bracket going to action/adventure characters?

I'm always up for a good tournament!

I've actually been away lately due to personal reasons. Both of my grandparents have died within the past 5 weeks, I've had both my parents and my wife's parents visit on two separate occasions, my daughter just started crawling so now she wants to play a lot more (which is great!), and my work schedule has been hectic.

Also, there hasn't been much DC product that has interested me lately. That's going to change soon, though, as the Capullo Batman line, AO boxed set, Red Hood and the Outlaws, and tons of other stuff is on its way. Happy days are here again!
I review an unhealthy amount of Batman and Batgirl related stuff at http://www.thepicreview.com
